My husband and his long-time best buddy have birthdays just a few days apart. We have always made an occasion of celebrating them together.
On one very special occasion for the two, their fortieth birthdays, we cruised the French West Indies, on a catamaran captained by my husband. We provisioned the boat, and set sail- to adventure, eat, drink and be merry! Since we would be “unplugged” from reality for the week on the boat, we had close friends and family members submit short cell phone videos of birthday wishes to us by text, which we saved and played for Captain Paul and First Mate Josh. The two friends have boated together since childhood, so it was only natural that we would celebrate them in this way. It was a trip to remember!
But life rarely always allow time for a trip to the French West Indies. Schedules get busy, and life clips on, but memories are made when we make a priority of setting certain moments apart.
Two years later, we decided to get together to for a themed birthday dinner, to plan our next sailing adventure!
I pulled out a beautiful model sail boat, that had been given to my husband as a housewarming gift, years ago, by a sailing friend. The sailboat centerpiece provided inspiration for the rest of tablescape. I filled some deep turquoise blown glass bottles that I had on hand, with some sand I keep in my floral design stash. I hand wrote a couple of special birthday messages, and rolled them into the bottles like scroll paper. It was fun to reveal the menu, and their birthday cards “message in a bottle” style.
I built a table scape around the boat by layering items with interesting details in sea blue hues. I used bright turquoise lacquered chargers, and deep cobalt blue glassware. I added to the fun with nautical place cards and details that imitated sailing rope.
That night we sat around the dining table, toasting to friendship, and our next trip!
