Early this morning, as a parent volunteer, I carried what seemed like a tower of donut boxes into our children’s school.  Approaching the teachers lounge with this stack of glazed goodness, I was greeted by wide eyes and even wider smiles. This got me thinking about the magic of “glazed”.Recently I updated a piece of furniture for my mother- an antique cherry silver chest she had hoped to keep. The size of the piece was perfect, and it served a specific need-dedicated storage for her silver flatware and serving knives.  But the little cherry chest had been working hard for decades, and it’s finish was tired and dated. We had been making decorative updates throughout the space, so it was beginning to stand out like a sore thumb. Mom has watched me paint and transform furniture and cabinets for years, but she was nervous about this piece, because of the formality of her dining room.  She wasn’t going for the shabby chic painted furniture look.  I assured her there were more “finished” options.  I took her to visit my specialty paints resource, friendly shop owner Margi! With the reassurance of a how-to video on glazing, we showed Mom how carefully and easily a special piece could be transformed in one afternoon. We made product selections, and headed to the house with the proper supplies to start our glazing  project. Amy Howard home products are SO easy to use! (Link to video https://www.amyhowardhome.com/blogs/how-to-do/how-to-use-amy-howard-at-home-glazed-over)  Our preparation was super simple-NO sanding! Layering the products created the silky smooth finish we had hoped to achieve-breathing new life into this otherwise tired piece.  The magic of glaze, and fear not, it’s calorie free!

Oh how I love being able to salvage functional pieces, and make use of what we already have! My resourceful Mimi was doing these types of projects back in 1942. In her journal, she writes: “Saturday morningI refinished a desk for my bedroom.”
